Roy W. Allen mixed up creamy root beers and sold the frosty mug of the charming drink for one nickel in 1919 in Lodi, California. The mixture was a local hit as well as Allen’s first root beer stand in Lodi. Soon he opened his second stand in Sacramento, and thus the business continued to grown up. In 1922, Frank Wright, an employee from Allen’s first stand in Lodi, joined with Allen as a partner. They combined their initials ‘A’ and ‘W’ and formally named the beverage – A&W Root Beer. In 1956, Allen started to sold A&W Root Beer franchise, and to ensure its uniform beverage quality and name, the locations outside U.S. become A & W Restaurants to concentrate exclusively on each franchise operator. A standard menu was introduced for the restaurants chain in 1978. Today the restaurant locations serve hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries, and other favorites including A&W’s hits.
Currently based in Louisville, Kentucky, the company started franchising in 1925 according to its historical journey, and now has more than 600 locations inside U.S. and around the world. The company is also in venture with the Yum! Brands, which has nearly 32,500 units in more than 100 countries, and also owns some other popular brands.
